{"id":39661,"date":"2026-09-17T20:17:41","date_gmt":"2026-09-17T17:17:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reoveemahutid.ee\/?p=39661"},"modified":"2026-09-17T20:23:42","modified_gmt":"2026-09-17T17:23:42","slug":"holding-tank-bedding-backfill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reoveemahutid.ee\/en\/holding-tank-bedding-backfill\/","title":{"rendered":"Sewage holding tank bedding and backfill: avoiding installation mistakes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Once the pit is filled, nobody can see whether the sand under and around your sewage holding tank (<em>reoveemahuti<\/em>, in legal texts <em>reovee kogumismahuti<\/em>; UK readers may know it as a cesspool or cesspit) went in as the manufacturer asked. The tank has no outlet and is emptied by tanker (<em>purgimine<\/em>), so it has to stay sealed and in place. Vesmaco&#8217;s installation guide is specific about the sand, the layers and the water, and says the warranty does not apply if its instructions are ignored. Below: four holding tank backfill (<em>tagasit\u00e4ide<\/em>) mistakes, what the guides say about each and how to avoid it, and a checklist to use before each layer is covered.<\/p>\n<h2>Mistake 1: stones, rubble or a hard spot under the tank<\/h2>\n<p><strong>What it looks like:<\/strong> sand with stones in it; crushed stone or building rubble tipped in with the backfill; a bed thinner than 20 cm; a boulder, bedrock or bare concrete slab directly under the tank.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What the guides say:<\/strong> Vesmaco&#8217;s guide for its reinforced-fibreglass (GRP) tanks uses <strong>stone-free sand, fraction 0\u20133 mm, compacted to 95 % of the ground&#8217;s natural density (not less than 1500 kg\/m\u00b3)<\/strong>: a bed of at least 20 cm, then the same sand up to ground level. Where the tank is anchored, 20 cm of compacted sand goes on top of the concrete slab. The Ministry of the Environment&#8217;s 2015 guide to on-site wastewater systems is less strict about material, accepting a compacted gravel or crushed-stone bed (at least 200 mm) and sand or gravel backfill, but it too requires 200 mm of compacted stone-free sand between an anchoring slab and the tank and says a holding tank must never sit directly on a slab or other hard base. For a Vesmaco tank, follow Vesmaco&#8217;s guide. Both guides point the same way: the tank should rest on an even layer of compacted sand, not on stones or a hard base.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to avoid it:<\/strong> check the delivery (in 0\u20133 mm sand, nothing should be larger than 3 mm), agree the fraction with your installer in writing, and have protruding rock removed so that the full 20 cm of sand lies under the whole tank.<\/p>\n<h2>Mistake 2: clay, spoil or frozen backfill<\/h2>\n<p><strong>What it looks like:<\/strong> the spoil heap beside the pit pushed back in; frozen clods or snow mixed into the sand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What the guide says:<\/strong> stone-free sand, compacted to 95 % of natural density in 30 cm layers, all the way to ground level. Excavated clay, topsoil and mixed spoil are not that material; what a clay plot changes in the pit is covered in <a href=\"\/en\/holding-tank-clay-soil\/\">installing a holding tank in clay soil<\/a>. Frozen backfill is the winter version of the same mistake: the guide gives no cold-weather rules, but frozen clods and snow cannot be compacted like loose sand, and they settle when they thaw.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to avoid it:<\/strong> plan and price sand for the whole pit, not only the bed, and keep frozen material out. If the work falls in the cold season, ask the supplier and your installer beforehand what they advise for backfilling in frost. Planning for cold-season work is in <a href=\"\/en\/installing-holding-tank-winter\/\">installing a holding tank in winter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Mistake 3: no water ballast, or water at the wrong moment<\/h2>\n<p><strong>What it looks like:<\/strong> straps tensioned on an empty tank; sand packed around an empty tank because nobody arranged water; all the water added at the end.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What the guides say:<\/strong> Vesmaco&#8217;s guide says to fill a quarter of the tank with water <strong>before<\/strong> tensioning the straps (textile straps only), and to <strong>keep adding water while<\/strong> the sand layers go in, without giving reasons. Read as a quarter of the volume, a 5 m\u00b3 tank takes 5 000 L \u00f7 4 = 1 250 L. At roughly 1 kg per litre that is about 1.25 t, roughly four times the empty tank&#8217;s 290\u2013300 kg. The ministry guide adds that an empty or half-empty tank can lift where soil water is high; when that calls for anchoring is covered in <a href=\"\/en\/holding-tank-anchoring\/\">holding tank anchoring<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to avoid it:<\/strong> arrange the water supply before installation day, and level the tank before any water goes in, as the guide&#8217;s order has it. Agree with your installer how &#8220;a quarter&#8221; is measured, because the guide does not say whether it means volume or height; if unsure, ask the supplier. In a horizontal cylinder the two differ. Treating the tank as a plain cylinder, a quarter of the volume reaches about 30 % of the diameter (roughly 40 cm in a D1400 tank), while water a quarter of the way up holds only about a fifth of the volume.<\/p>\n<h2>Mistake 4: loose sand under the haunches, between the legs and at the pipes<\/h2>\n<p>The haunches are the zone under the lower curve of a horizontal tank, between the bed and its widest point.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it looks like:<\/strong> the pit filled in one or two deep lifts; sand pushed in with the excavator bucket and compacted only on top; a pit so tight that nobody can work sand under the tank&#8217;s curve; pipes connected over loose sand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What the guides say:<\/strong> Vesmaco&#8217;s guide singles out this zone: while placing the first 30 cm layer, compact carefully <strong>under the tank and between its support legs<\/strong>; then continue in compacted 30 cm layers, and compact the sand carefully at the pipe connections. The ministry guide asks for a pit large enough to backfill and compact properly under and beside the tank, and for thorough compaction at the tank&#8217;s sides and ends and under and around the pipe connections. Vesmaco&#8217;s guide gives no pit width in its text, so agree the working space around the tank with your installer before digging.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to avoid it:<\/strong> before work starts, ask your installer how they will compact the sand next to the shell and under the curve, and with what equipment (if in doubt, ask the supplier what may be used next to the shell), and make sure each layer is compacted before the next one goes in.<\/p>\n<h2>Before each layer is covered: a checklist<\/h2>\n<p>Once the next layer is in, the one below cannot be inspected. The photos are your record that the guide was followed, and some municipalities ask for them: Saaremaa vald, for example, requires an act of covered works with photos (<em>kaetud t\u00f6\u00f6de akt fotodega<\/em>) before a holding tank is taken into use. Check what your own municipality requires; the commissioning paperwork is covered in <a href=\"\/en\/holding-tank-installation-steps\/\">installation step by step<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Frequently asked questions<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Our plot is sandy. Can the sand we dig out go back around the tank?<\/strong> Vesmaco&#8217;s guide specifies the material, not its origin: stone-free sand, fraction 0\u20133 mm, compactable to 95 % of natural density. Dug-out sand with stones, topsoil or clay in it does not meet that. Have your installer check it against the specification, and ask Vesmaco when in doubt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who is responsible if the backfill is done wrong?<\/strong> Vesmaco&#8217;s guide says the company is not liable for damage to the tank arising during installation or for damage caused by ignoring the guide, and that the warranty does not apply if the instructions are violated or ignored. Agree in writing with whoever does the work that the installation follows Vesmaco&#8217;s guide; what else belongs in that agreement is in <a href=\"\/en\/holding-tank-installation-cost\/\">what an installation quote should include<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The tank is already buried and I suspect a mistake. What now?<\/strong> Raise it before the tank goes into use: with your installer, and with Vesmaco, describing what was done and sending any photos.
